FPM FAQs

1. What is FPM?
FPM stands for Fellow Programme in Management. It is equivalent to Ph. D.


2. What is the eligibility condition for admission?
A candidates looking for admission into FPM should have:

a Master’s degree in any discipline, with at lease 55 per cent marks (High second class) and at least 50% marks at Bachelor’s degree level
OR
a Bachelor’s degree with complete professional qualifications like CA, ICWA, CS with at least 55 percent marks and with minimum of two years post-qualification work experience
OR
B.E./B.Tech degrees etc (4 years/8 Semester Bachelor’s degree) with at least 60% marks with minimum two years post-qualification work experience

3. Who should apply?
The FPM seeks high quality candidates with strong academic background, preferably with professional experience, and intellectual curiosity needed for scholarship in management.

4. Do I have to take CAT for getting admission into FPM?
If you do not have a CAT/GMAT/GRE/ score you may appear for a Research Aptitude Test (RAT) to be conducted by the institute on a pre announced date.

Lecturers working in AICTE/UGC recognized university and colleges on a full time basis for a minimum period of three years in management related area are not required to submit any score. They are directly called for interview.

Candidates having qualified UGC/CSIR JRF Research test are also not required to submit CAT score.

5. What is RAT?
The examination pattern of RAT is similar to CAT. The Research Aptitude Test (RAT) judges the applicant on the basis of his/her quantitative, analytical, language and research skills. RAT is usually a multiple choice type test. The duration of RAT is 90-120 minutes. The format of the test may change from year to year depending on the needs of the institute.

6. How do I apply?
Download the application form from our website. Duly fill in the application form and send it by post to FPM office along with all your relevant certificates and a demand draft of Rs300 payable at Indore.

7. What is the process of admission to the programme?
If you are short listed based on your standard test score or research aptitude test score by the respective Area/FPM office, you will be called for the interview to be held at Indore. Admission is subject to the recommendation of the interview panel.

8. Can I apply in more than one Area?
Yes, a candidate can apply in three areas.

9. Does the programme accept international students?
Yes, international students can also apply.

10. Is the FPM at IIMI very difficult?
The institute expects high academic rigor and integrity. It has stringent requirements at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet the requirements are asked to resign from the programme.

11. What are the important stages in the FPM program?

The programme consists of four stages:

First Year
Second Year
Comprehensive Examination
Thesis

In the first two years students do the course work .The first year of the course work is common with IIMI’s post graduate programme (PGP).

The second year of the programme is intended for acquiring in depth knowledge in the area of specialization and related fields so as to develop analytical and comprehensive research skills. . Additionally, participants take the FPM compulsory courses, which are specially designed to provide expertise in teaching and research, and to acquire integrated learning.

On completion of the second year course work, the participants take the area comprehensive examinations.


After passing the comprehensive examination, the participant enters the thesis stage.

12. Is waiver from first year courses is available to those who have an MBA/PGP/PGPX degree?

Alumni of IIMs (PGP, PGP-ABM, PGP-PMP, PGPX) are eligible to apply for exemption of first year PGP courses, provided the candidate has obtained in the first year of the above degree/diploma a minimum grade point equivalent to 2.55, with no Fs and not more than two Ds.

Similar program of other universities/Business Schools are eligible to apply for exemption of first year PGP courses, provided they satisfy the following conditions:

The candidate should have completed a full-time, two year MBA degree, two year PG Diploma in Management or one year PGPX, one year PGP-PMP (or equivalent) in Management from any recognised University / Business School / Institution.

The candidate should have obtained in the first year of the above degree/diploma a minimum average grade point equivalent to IIMI’s 2.55, with no Fs and not more than two Ds.

The candidates should have obtained the qualifying degree or diploma, not more than five years ago, with respect to the beginning of the first term of the FPM programme into which she/he is seeking admission.

The granting of the waiver is not automatic. The final decision related to the waiver is made by the FPM EC by taking into account all relevant factors, including:

The quality and content of the program (MBA/PGDM/PGP-ABM etc.) undergone by the candidate. The FPM Executive committee will come up with a list of such institutions in order to have transparency.

The performance of the candidate in the program.

The FPM EC, on applying its criteria, can grant full, partial, or no waiver to the candidate.

13. How do I choose my research topic?
FPM students can choose research topic of their interest and motivation under the supervision of a suitable guide interested in the area and a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom they have to work towards their thesis.

14. What support is available for presenting research papers in Indian and international conferences?
FPM participants are encouraged to present papers, which have been submitted to and accepted at professional conferences. IIMI provides financial support for such participation.

15. How do I find a job, after completing my doctoral studies?
Placement office facilitates the process of placement of FPM participants.

16. Is FPM from IIMI recognized as equivalent to a Ph. D?
Yes, FPM from IIMI is recognized as equivalent to a Ph.D.

17. What is expected from FPM students?
FPM students are required to do research work and publish quality research paper of international standard.

18. Do I apply for a specific area or can I choose my area after getting admission?
Students here are admitted by specific areas. You can apply to three areas but you must mention your preference for these areas in your application. Once a student is admitted in a specific area, the change is not allowed.

19. How much time it takes to complete FPM?
It usually takes 4-4.5 years to finish the course. The maximum duration within which a candidate is supposed to complete the degree is six years.

20. What's the degree/title that I get at the completion of the course?
On successful completion of all requirements of the programme, the participant is conferred the title "Fellow of the Indian Institute of Management Indore" at the annual convocation of the Institute.

21. How do I sustain with my family for these four/five years?
IIMI provides one of the best financial packages for doctoral students. Currently the students are provided Rs 15,000/ pm as stipend for first and second year and Rs.20,000 for third and fourth year.

22. Do FPM students get any other financial support to meet academic expenses?
Yes, We provide contingency grant of Rs.25,000 per annum.

23. Do FPM students get accommodation in hostel?
FPM is a fully residential programme and the participants are required to stay in the hostel. Limited number of married accommodation is also available (subject to availability and other rules).

24. How many students get selected per year?
The selection is area specific and entirely depends on the candidate’s performance. There is no lower or upper limit as such. Generally we offer admission to 20-25 students per year.

25. What is the last date for submitting the application?
The last date for submitting the application is 15th February 2010

26. Does IIM Indore help lecturers to pursue FPM?
Considering R C Bhargava Committee report that there is shortage of qualified persons to teach in business schools because of the inadequate number of persons doing doctoral programmes, IIM Indore has taken the initiative to encourage regular full time faculty in any business school/college recognized by AICTE/UGC having a minimum of three years’ of teaching experience as on 31st March 2010. The admission of such faculty members is considered on the basis of the evaluation of their portfolio of activities rather than on CAT/GMAT score.
