Press Release on the one day Working Conference on PURA: Conceptualization, Impact Assessment and Implementation Issues

Indian Institute of Management Indore is pleased to announce a one day Working Conference on PURA on 10th June 2010.
 
PURA is a concept is aimed to bridge the gap between rural and urban India. At the basic level, it enhances the quality of life in the rural India by providing transport (road / rail) connectivity, resource accessibility (water and sanitation), better living conditions (by providing access to health, education and livelihood).
 
At the second level PURA would identify potential employment opportunities and help rural India to realize it, through public intervention.
 
At the next level, PURA would provide employment opportunities and good standards of living appropriate to the village environment.
 
At the matured level PURA would make the villages self contained in terms of good living conditions.
 
A cluster of villages would be able to meet the employment opportunities in terms of demand and supply in a self contained manner. Eventually, PURA will reduce the migration of working force from the rural to urban India.
 
IIM Indore is committed to be a socially relevant premier management Institution. As a part of this broad objective, IIM Indore has initiated a sequence of activities in the areas related to social entrepreneurship, micro finance, livelihood enhancement activities, impact assessment study of socially relevant schemes initiated by the Government.
 
IIM Indore envisages an active role in accelerating the implementation of PURA concept in this country. It envisages to be a hub where action research on PURA will be initiated. Academic issues related to implementation of PURA would be discussed, debated and documented. The proposed conference is the first step in this direction.
 
This conference will be inaugurated by Dr. APJ Kalam in the morning between 1000 – 1045 on June 10, 2010. This will be followed by a session on Reflections on PURA by Mr. Arvind Mayaram, Ministry of Rural Development and Mr. Prasanna Srinivasan of SVCS, ILFS.
 
This will be followed by a session by IIM Indore students on their perspectives on PURA and its applicability in Madhya Pradesh based on a rural immersion programme undertaken by our students last year.
 
The post lunch session will cover the PURA experiences implemented in Chitrakoot and Periyar districts.
 
There will be another session on PURA implementation models. In addition, there will be a session on perspectives of various stakeholders on PURA.
 
The conference will close at 5.30 p.m. with an Action Agenda for future.
 
To facilitate the understanding of PURA, a Tutorial on Public Private Partnership is organized between 0845 – 0915 as a pre-conference tutorial.
