A Typical Day
Every institute has its own culture and way of life. What better way to judge
the same, than to have a sneak peak at one of the participants' 24 hour routine
(if you can call it that, considering the extreme variations). A word of caution
before you read on: the description below cannot be generalized to every
candidate because as is very well said – “We all paint the canvas in our very
own ways? With that in mind, here you go...
Early Morning Woes:
7.00 AM – After numerous alarms and snoozes, you manage to bring your lazy body
to the reality of “another morning!” Let’s face it; no one likes to wake up. No,
classes (at least not normal ones) aren’t till 8.45, but you’re bound to have
some work left for the morning lectures. The printers are always the busiest
between 8 and 8.45.
8.00 – 8.45 AM – Probably one of the busiest moments in hostels when everyone is
buzzing around getting things done. The ones who manage better (isn’t that what
we all learn here??) are even able to grab a quick bite in the hostel mess.
8.45 AM – 3.15 PM – 3 classes of 75 minutes each with very brief (what do you
expect from a participant writing this??) 15 minute breaks in between, for tea
and snacks. As far as the classes go, just a few words of advice (or gyaan,
as we call it at Planet-I)... It’s up to you to make them lively and a good
experience. The professors are here to facilitate you, not spoon-feed you.
These timings are of course specific to the first year, because in the second
year, you may just find yourself running around for classes at any time of the
day.
Lunch and the World Beyond:
1.33 PM – When you’re hungry, it doesn’t take more than 3 minutes to reach the
"melting pot". Around this time you’ll probably find close to the entire batch
in and around the mess. This is the best time to “socialize? and discuss the
funny moments of the day's classes. (Oops... I just forgot something. You may
just have a couple of quizzes starting from 4 PM, and in that case, lunch won’t
be your first priority.)
Are we scaring you? Chill out. It’s a whole new dimension to life. You learn to
enjoy the quizzes. Naah, we’re kidding. They’re nightmares some times, but
considering the fact that you’ve made it to IIM Indore, we're sure you’ll
manage.
Anyways, life beyond classes and quizzes begins after this. Let's discontinue
the timeline for a while and just tell you the various things you find students
(Sorry.... I mean participants) engaged in between lunch and dinner (which is a
more varying activity).
Sports/Games – You have a huge array to choose from: Cricket, Basketball,
Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Chess and even Carrom. These are
in addition to of course the gamut of computer games (Counter Strike and AOE
being the most popular).
Gym/Jog – The institute has provided us a state-of-the-art gym, and nature has
provided us the best place to jog. In all, you have the best opportunity to
sweat yourself out. And, as a friend of ours once said, you can experience “The
Jogger’s High?”
SAC/Club Activities – The Students Activities Council (SAC) and various
Activity/Interest Clubs run a fair part of Planet-I’s life. It’s like a true
democracy; Of the Participants, By the Participants and For the Participants. We
even have our very own miniature elections. Anyways, coming back to the day’s
activities... These clubs may keep you engrossed with various guest lectures and
events, which stretch across all domains – finance, marketing, operations, IT,
economics, theatrics, photography and general quizzing.
Study – You won’t survive the next day’s classes without a little bit of
pre-reading. And in case there are any submissions, the earlier you start the
better. But then again, many still end up running around the next morning taking
printouts. You can’t blame them. There’s so much to do.
Sleep – A sometimes necessary but avoidable (?) decision. You don’t want to just
let the two years at IIM Indore dwindle away in sleep, do you?
Watch the Sunset – We just have to mention this as a separate point. You have to
see it to believe it: one of the best sunset points you’ll ever see in life.
Under the Stars:
Back to the timeline....
8.00 PM – You’re at the mess (In case you haven’t run off to the vibrant Indore
city), which is abuzz again.
This time is the most unpredictable in the entire timeline. You might find
yourself celebrating a festival, dancing to the beats of a DJ, enacting a play
or watching an open-air movie! You won’t know where the time flies.
11.58 PM – With over 650 participants on campus, almost every day is a Birthday
(at least for some poor soul). Mails are sent to ensure no one celebrates alone.
How do we celebrate? Well, that’s one thing we’d like to keep to ourselves!
Post-Midnight: Don’t be in a hurry to hit the sack. There are still a few hours
to go before you’re getting any sleep. What will keep you busy? Oh... there’s
always something. That’s probably why you’ll find ghosts (they just look like
ghosts, don’t worry!) roaming around the hostels at all times. There are
assignments to type, presentation slides to prepare, cases to analyse, CVs to
build and much more. Of course, you always have the night canteen to keep you
awake...
The agenda is clear – Work Hard, Party Harder!
