Given the academic rigour that students here have to go through,
many of them turn to sports to recharge themselves, be it right
after classes in the afternoons or between case discussions and
assignments at 1 A.M. The wide spaces, the lush lawns, the
basketball and badminton turfs and the converted football field can
always be found filled with shouting, laughter and the inherent
competitive spirit of the participants. However, this being India,
cricket rules! Students can be found engaged in impromptu games of
cricket through the day (and night), at all places and at all times,
sometimes even in the breaks between classes
The
sports facilities and the various sports events are handled by the
Sports Committee, an elected student body comprising of
representatives from both the current PGP batches. The Sports
Committee, or SportsCom as it's called, organises events through
the year, starting with Chunauti, the traditional series of
events between the new batch of PGP students and the current 2nd
year students. This year on February 13, for the first time ever at
IIM Indore, did the faculty and students come to a level playing
field, literally, and etched history in golden letters. A series of
12 over matches was played between the students and the faculty
members.
Apart from this a host of tournaments are organised over the entire
year, be it section-wise events, year-wise events, hostel-block-wise
events or even matches between students majoring in marketing and
finance. There is also a football league structured on the
European football leagues that happens for the duration of two
terms, wherein students form their own teams and a detailed schedule
is drawn up at the start of the year. Ranbhoomi, the annual
sports week again has a plethora of events - all major team sports
and individual events - and culminates in the Sports Day.
A unique feature of life at IIM Indore is the floodlights set up in
the hostel blocks' squares. This enables students to play when they
wish to, given that classes are held at different timings for the
batches because of electives. The floodlights come on every night
and one can see students playing anything from cricket to basketball
till the wee hours of the morning.
Taking
the concept of experiential learning that IIM Indore encourages,
sports events are also coupled with other disciplines. For example,
taking a leaf out of the Indian Premier League, the cricketing
phenomenon, SportsCom in partnership with Mercur-I, the marketing
club, have come up with a local version - the IIM Indore Premier
League. Students of each sections form marketing teams of 4-6
members who then manage their respective cricket teams. The
tournament takes place over a period of about two months - all are
floodlit matches - during which the marketing teams bid for players,
create, advertise and build a brand for their cricket teams. They
are allowed to use any form of advertising within the campus and
it's a common sight to see music systems and flyers on the
side-lines when matches are taking place. Students also use this
opportunity to come out with their own jingles, videos and banners
centred on their branding strategy. There are two prizes to be won,
one for the best marketing team and one for the cricket team that
wins the tournament
