With an objective to provide insights to the senior police officers working in the field about the qualities a great leader must have, the two day Leadership Programme for the Officers of Madhya Pradesh Police began at IIM Indore on February 2, 2016. The inaugural ceremony took place in the presence of Shri Babulal Gour, Hon. Home Minister, Government of Madhya Pradesh; Ms. Rina Mitra, Special DG (Training), Police Headquarter, Bhopal; Mr. Milind Kanaskar, ADG, Rustamji Armed Police Training College, Indore and Professor Rishikesha T. Krishnan, Director, IIM Indore.
Professor Krishnan mentioned that IIM Indore is proud to have an opportunity to collaborate with the Police Department and offer this training programme. He welcomed and thanked Hon. Minister Shri Gour for his presence. He also noted that this programme would not only help the officers to enhance their leadership skills but the Institute would also get a chance to learn about the contributions which can be made to support the police department.
This was followed by a brief address by Ms. Mitra, who mentioned about the objectives of the programme. She noted that the word ‘police’ has always been related to leadership. Right from the lower level of the department to the highest level, leadership is an important factor for proper functioning of the department. She discussed how leadership plays an important role in maintaining law and order and investigation. She noted that this programme would help the officers to not only work upon their motivational, communication and leadership skills but also give them an opportunity to know their colleagues from various zones.
He mentioned that to help an ordinary person excel in his skills, training is extremely important, and this training programme is expected to fulfil the same motive helping the police officers learn about communication and leadership skills. ‘One continuously needs to practice his skills and enhance his knowledge to the field he belongs to, so that he is able to make quick and correct decisions when any situation arises. The continuous training would help the person to become an effective leader’, Shri Gour noted.
Day One of the programme witnessed four lectures by IIM Indore faculty on various topics such as Interpersonal Effectiveness, Motivating Others, Group Decision Making and Building Effective Teams. The last session had a Self Preparation/Case Analysis/Group Work, which gave the officers an overall summary of the first day.
The second and the last day of the programme would have sessions on Conflict Management, Managing Subordinates and Leadership.
The two day training programme is being attended by officers from across the state, who would be getting a chance to enhance their motivational and communication skills, which may help them effectively communicate with the citizens and create a positive atmosphere for each other.
