IIM Indore community came together to pay respect to Mahatma Gandhi & freedom fighter Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji on October 02, 2020 at the Institute’s Gandhi Park.
Professor Himanshu Rai, Director, IIM Indore addressed the community and shared learnings from Gandhiji’s life which are relevant even today for all of us. He noted that today is the time when we not only need to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in our homes and surroundings, but also our mind, thoughts and heart need to be pure and clean. ‘Gandhiji always focused on truth—saying what you mean and doing what you say. When we are able to create a balance between our words and action, that’s when we become an honest person’, he said.
The second lesson he shared from Gandhiji’s learning was non-violence. ‘Violence is used to exploit and dominate people and we need to end this. People also need to understand that violence leads nowhere. Gandhiji said we will not strike a blow but we will receive them and through our pain we will make them see injustice because it hurts—so that they also feel our pain while watching us’, he said. He noted that even verbal violence needs to be taken care of.
Professor Rai noted that Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji was simplicity personified—be it his style, the way he spoke, or even his behaviour. ‘This current pandemic has taught us to live in minimum resources—leading to a simple life. We need to understand that modernization is full of materialism. However, simplicity has its own advantages. We can achieve a lot even in a few resources’, he concluded.
The event was attended by a few faculty, staff and their family members.
