IIM Indore community celebrated the 69th Republic Day with great patriotic fervour and enthusiasm on January 26, 2018. The function began with the National Anthem followed by the flag hoisting ceremony by Professor Rishikesha T. Krishnan, Director, IIM Indore. Col. Gururaj Gopinath Pamidi (Retd.), CAO, IIM Indore was also present on the occasion. The Central Lawn echoed with patriotic zeal, when all the students, faculty, staff and their family members sang the National Anthem.
Professor Krishnan then delivered the Republic Day Address. He noted that Republic Day commemorates the anniversary of the Constitution of India coming into effect. ‘Among the many innovations of independent India, our Constitution is perhaps the most important. It has provided us a durable framework to govern a complex country. While it has been amended several times, the amendments have in general strengthened the country by helping us adapt to changing priorities and circumstances’, he said.
Speaking of ‘The Rule of Law’, Professor Krishnan said that it is a fundamental principle which upholds the fair functioning of our democracy. Today we must re-dedicate ourselves to upholding the Rule of Law in all ways possible, he said. Discussing about the IIM Bill, Professor Krishnan said, ‘This year, Republic Day has a special meaning for us in the IIMs. The Indian Institutes of Management Act which was signed by the President of India on December 31, 2017 comes into effect on January 31, 2018. We are now explicitly recognised as Institutions of National Importance with a separate charter and legal status granted by India’s parliament.’
He encouraged the gathering of students, staff and faculty members to justify the faith the people of India through Parliament have placed, by using this new status to strive for excellence in all that the Institution does.
The celebration concluded with High Tea.
