- Communication
The Communications Area at IIM Indore is the largest Core Communication department across the Indian Institutes of Management, which reflects IIM Indore’s unique position as the only IIM that currently offers flagship programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive levels.
The teaching and research profile of current Communication faculty members recognizes the growing and diverse needs of management education. The Area thus comprises faculty members from diverse teaching and research backgrounds including the domains of Business and Professional Communication, Linguistics and Literature, Media and Communication Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender and Diversity Studies, Film, Theater and Visual Studies.
From its initial days, the Area has added extensively to the Institute’s intellectual capital, output and contribution to management education with its range of course offerings and material, pedagogical modes and applications and management development and training programmes for executive education. Area members have actively taken up administrative responsibilities for key functions: Prof. Amrita Joshi is a member of the committee that oversees requirements for AACSB accreditation; Prof. Swatantra is the co-chair for PGP-Mumbai at the IIM Indore-Mumbai Campus; Professors Abha Chatterjee and Madhusri Shrivastava have been Members of the Board of Governors at IIM Indore; Prof. Abha Chatterjee has chaired the Institute’s Disability Centre which is now chaired by Prof. Urjani Chakraborty. Prof. Dibyadyuti Roy has been Chair of the Faculty Development Programme and is now actively engaged in the Institute’s online education initiatives, especially in the MOOCs area--he is also organizing the first ever Digital Humanities Conference in India, in collaboration with IIT Indore and under the aegis of DHAI (Digital Humanities Alliance of India). Prof. Shweta Kushal chairs the Institute’s Internal Complaints Committee and is a current member of the the Board of Governors at IIM Indore. Other than these core responsibilities, the Area members have also been active members on various review, planning and organizing committees from time to time.
- Economics
The discipline of Economics, arguably, is at the core of all management principles. Indeed the basic principles of Marketing, Financial, Human Resources, Strategic, Organization Design and General management would easily find overlap with some Economic theory. It is then essential to understand the economic and policy environment within which businesses function.
The Economics department at IIM Indore is engaged in a variety of activities. The department is significantly involved in teaching in the integrated programme (IPM) where the curriculum is benchmarked to the best of three-year Economics honours programmes in India and abroad. The other significant commitment include teaching foundation and elective courses in the two-year MBA and Executive programmes.
The department has expertise in almost all the major areas in economics such as Applied Microeconometrics, High Dimensional econometrics, Game theory and Mechanism design, Choice theory and Welfare economics, Productivity and Efficiency analysis, Development economics, Poverty and Inequality, Institutional economics, Environmental economics, Formal and Informal Labour markets, Migration, Direct and Indirect tax, International Trade, Structural Transformation and Economic Growth, Fiscal federalism and Regional economics, International finance and Banking, Monetary Economics and so on.

- Finance & Accounting
Finance and Accounting (F&A) Area has experienced and young faculty in all functional areas of Finance and Accounting. Area faculty has teaching, research and consulting expertise in financial accounting, managerial accounting, corporate finance, corporate governance, financial markets and institutions (including banking and insurance) and issues related to behavioral finance.
The area faculty offers a large number of electives, across post graduate and doctoral level programs, which interlink different facets of finance and accounting with various case studies and simulations involving real-time financial data. The area faculty maintains a high-end financial trading lab through which participants learning is enriched with real-time examples. Besides offerings in the long-duration programs, area faculty also offer customized executive education programs targeted at finance professionals through on-campus; on-site and broadband-based programs.
F&A Faculty members’ research explores both firm-level and economy-level financial decisions and as well examine the impact of several regulatory changes of Indian corporate sector.
- Humanities and Social Sciences
ABOUT THE AREA
The Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Area is one of the unique features of IIM Indore. The HSS Area comprised of faculty members from core disciplines in Humanities and Social Sciences, namely Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Policy, and Sociology. The Area makes a distinctive contribution towards achieving the Institute’s vision of nurturing socially-conscious and humanistic managers, leaders, and entrepreneurs. With the growing expectation from business to shed its pure profit-making mind-set and contribute to the pressing concerns of humanity and society, the importance of HSS disciplines to the field of management education has been amplified.
TEACHING
The faculty members of the Area offer a diverse set of courses that aim to present a distinctive world-view to equip aspiring managers, leaders, and entrepreneurs develop a holistic understanding of business in the 21st century and in the days to come. The faculty members are engaged in offering various courses across all the major programmes managed by the institute. For the Integrated Programme in Management, the courses from the Area of HSS function as the programme’s building blocks during the first three years.
The Area of HSS offers both core and elective courses in Post Graduate Programme in Management (MBA), Post Graduate Programme in Management in HRM (MBA-HRM), Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), CCBMDO, and GMPE. Information Systems (IS) area is having members from multiple disciplines adding to the diversity of the group. In the era of technology disruption and data driven businesses, IS area is intensively involved in teaching and research activities in the domain of Technology Management, Analytics and Information Technology at undergraduate, post graduate, doctoral and executive education level. A range of core and elective courses are being offered by area in the domain of modern technology management and analytics. Specifically, teaching activity includes various themes like technology management, Business Intelligence, data mining, e-Commerce, Business Value of Information Systems, e-Government, Computing for Managers and Data Analytics.

- Marketing
Marketing is an organizational function, although customer-centric, seeks the welfare of all stakeholders. Marketing, as an academic area, not just covers aspects like branding and advertising, which assist in increasing the revenues for big corporates, but it also includes aspects like “bottom of the pyramid” marketing and marketing in subsistence marketplaces. Besides, marketing discipline covers issues like sustainability as well, which is a matter of larger concern to our society. The marketing department at IIM Indore is not just focused on the above-mentioned issues, but also it is committed toward world class and contextually relevant marketing research and education. Currently, the department is served by thirteen full-time faculty members. The faculty members in the area have obtained doctoral degrees/fellowships from leading institutions in India and abroad. Area members have published their research works in some of the highly reputed international and Indian academic journals in business management. In addition, area members have authored teaching cases, simulation exercises, books, and book chapters as well. Books authored by one of the faculty members are highly regarded by B-schools across India and abroad.
The area members research engagements involve the following contextually relevant aspects: channel management, channel relationships management, business-to-business marketing, mobile and digital advertising, consumer advocacy, tourism studies, customer relationship management (CRM), strategic marketing, marketing in emerging markets, brand management, design perception, behavioural judgement and decision-making, consumer information sharing, word-of-mouth (WOM), pricing, behavioural pricing, reference price, sports marketing and sports management. In addition, faculty members are actively engaged in socially relevant research areas like marketing in subsistence marketplaces, sustainability, and green marketing. Area members are actively engaged in management development programs (MDPs) and consultancy. The OM & QT area has initiated a Data Analytics teaching and research module at IIM Indore. An industry expert panel discussion was conducted to understand the market demand and courses required. Another initiative involves starting a research group on Maritime Logistics with some industry members. The aim is to develop a knowledge and research community for the logistics sector in India.

The OB&HRM area of Indian Institute of Management Indore supports a niche two-year post-graduate program titled PGP-HRM. The program is rooted in business rationalities and aims to hone the skills of participants in various functions of human resource management. - Strategic Management
There are nine faculty members in the Strategic Management Area. Diversity is central to the area, and its key strength. Faculty members bring in extensive industry experience in operations, regulation, manufacturing, and consultancy from prior roles in the government and private sectors.
The Strategic Management area faculty have research interests in business ethics, business history, business models, complexity theory, entrepreneurship, globalization and its effects, innovation, international management, mergers and acquisitions, public sector management, strategic decision making, top management teams, etc., in a very diverse set of industries that includes FMCG, manufacturing, media, telecom and transportation. Area members have published in leading journals like Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Computational and Mathematical Organization theory, Decision, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of World Business, MIT Sloan Management Review, Thunderbird International Business Review among others.
Faculty members of the Strategic Management area have extended consulting services to international agencies like World Bank and UNDP, central and state government ministries, public sector organizations, and the private sector. Faculty members have authored books and book chapters on Strategic Management, International Business and Best Business Practices.
The area offers two doctoral programs, one full-time, residential program and one part-time non-residential doctoral program for participants working in the industry. Our doctoral fellows have been placed at some of the leading management institutes in the country including IIMs Lucknow, Amritsar and Sirmaur and Thapar University. Some others have returned to their parent organizations in the government—for example, Income Tax and BSNL—to positions of enhanced responsibilities. As of 2018, the area has an enrolment of nine doctoral students in the full-time residential program, and ten candidates in the industry doctoral program.
The area offers compulsory courses in Strategic Management covering business strategy in Term II and corporate strategy in Term III for the flagship MBA program. Besides this, the area also offers over twenty electives courses for second year MBA students, covering International Management, Mergers and Acquisitions, Business Models, Strategy Consulting, Entrepreneurship, Competing with Capabilities, E-Business Strategy, etc. Most recently, the area has been offering Strategy Simulation as an elective to expose students to the integrative way in which businesses work and function.
