IIM Indore organised a one-day General Management Programme for Journalists on Friday, January 16, 2015. The Programme was attended by the representatives of various media firms of Indore.
After the registration of the participants and the formal lamp-lighting ceremony, the Programme commenced with its first lecture, delivered by Professor Rishikesha T. Krishnan, Director, IIM Indore. Professor Krishnan welcomed the participants to the Institute and introduced them to the Programme, that was especially designed keeping in view their interests.
In his insightful lecture on Business, Government, Society and the Media, Professor Krishnan noted the biggest challenges that India is facing in terms of education, health care, environment and non-renewable energy resources. He also discussed the ways in which media can play an important role in bringing about the desired changes. With the help of different theories and examples, he explained the possible impact of media in creating awareness in such issues.
Professor Krishnan’s lecture was followed by a lecture by Professor Ganesh Kumar, Faculty and Dean (Academics), IIM Indore, on Indian Economy: Where does it stand today. With the help of various examples, Professor Ganesh simplified the complex statistics of Indian economy and explained the transitions it has been through, and how economic reforms and policies affect the economy and the citizens.
The next guest talk of the Programme was delivered by eminent journalist and writer Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta. In his thought provoking address on the subject Moral Values and Code of Ethics in the Functioning of Journalists, Mr. Thakurta explained the importance of ethical journalism and observed that unethical journalism should be and can be avoided if one is clear with his goals of pursuing journalism. He noted the long term and short negative impacts of practicing unethical journalism and emphasized on the importance of maintaining the credibility of the news covered by journalists.
The final guest talk of the day was delivered by Professor Deepti Ganapathy, Visiting Faculty, IIM Indore, on How to Communicate Effectively. Professor Deepti’s lecture covered the major do’s and don’ts that every journalist must follow to communicate effectively. With the help of classroom exercises and discussions, she explained how a journalist can practice journalism more effectively and excel in his/her profession.
The Programme concluded with the vote of thanks extended by Dr. Akhtar Parvez and certificate distribution amongst the participants.
