IEEE-TEMS, IIM Indore conducted a series of talks followed by a panel discussion based on the theme ‘Analytics with the Analysts’ at the Institute on November 23, 2018. The objective of the event was to provide a platform to the participants to learn from the experiences of the analytics experts, interact with them, and get inspired from their success stories.
The event began with a lamp lighting ceremony by Prof. Rishikesha T. Krishnan, Director, IIM Indore and Prof. Rajeeva L Karandikar, Director, Chennai Mathematical Institute.
Professor Krishnan then welcomed the guests and noted that although analytics is being used regularly in practice, integration of it with functional domains is the major task ahead.
This was followed by a keynote address by Prof. Rajeeva Karandikar. He began his address by noting, to what extent a mis-judgement can happen due to lack of appropriateness in context. The next session of invited talk began under the chairmanship of Prof. Subhamoy Dey of IIM Indore. The sessions concluded with questions and answers, wherein the participants raised their queries about analytics.
The major highlight of the day was the Panel Discussion on the topic- ‘Analytics with the Analysts-the road ahead’. The panellists included distinguished personalities in data analytics who themselves have vast hands on experience in analytics, namely, Mr. Sameer Dhanrajani, Fractal Analytics; Dr. Mahesh Iyer, Sineflex Solutions; Mr. Nitin Sareen, Aditya Birla Group; Mr. Ashish Desai, Aditya Birla Payments Bank; Prof. Arnab K Laha, IIM Ahmedabad; Mr. Naveen Yeri, Wells Fargo India and Mr. Sukiran Maity, LitMass Analytics. Moderating the session, Prof. Sujay Mukhoti, faculty in Statistics at IIM Indore, raised very pertinent questions on importance of analytics in shaping management as a field of scientific study and it’s future contribution to business, governance and society. Participating in the debate, Mr. Sukiran Maity of LitMass analytics emphasized on the context before getting to the solution. Dr. Mahesh Iyer from Sineflex Solutions stressed on the importance of academic research being the engine for analytical solutions in the industry. Prof. Arnab Laha of IIM Ahmedabad noted that artificial intelligence would profoundly impact management decision processes and highlighted the need for management students to keep abreast with emerging technologies. Mr. Sameer Dhanrajani from Fractal Analytics pointed out that reimagining the decision making process becoming simplified with the blend of business and technology facets of analytics and AI.
The panel discussion concluded with the thoughts that managing organisations in a scientific approach with the power of analytics demands a well thought out mix of training in statistical, computing, managerial and soft skills in this data driven era. All the panellists agreed that until academia and industry join hands together, the optimal mix would be hard to accomplish.
The session was followed by interaction of the speakers with the participants. The event came to a conclusion with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Aditya Prasun, president IEEE-TEMS, IIM Indore chapter.
