Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) alumna Anita Sharma (Batch 2016) was conferred with Award of Excellence by Bharatiya Grameen Mahila Sangh (BGMS) with Haryana Women Development Corporation, Government of Haryana, on International Women’s Day. She received this award for her social initiatives for people with disabilities.
Anita started a driving school for people with locomotive disability in September 2016. Anita was nominated by one of her driving school students. The nomination was followed by a personal interview. A total of 103 nominations were received, 25 women were selected for different categories, in which Anita was selected for ‘Award of Excellence’ for social service category.
‘As a person with the locomotive disability, I understand the importance of ‘being self-dependent’. My extensive traveling experiences in India and abroad made me realize that traveling for a disabled person is very difficult in India. Relying on public transport, private cabs, and poor infrastructure makes life more difficult and challenging for PwDs. Hence, I started taking driving lessons. The network is growing and people with disabilities are realizing its importance’, she says.
Currently, Anita is working in the capacity of Assistant Professor with the School of Management, Thapar University, Chandigarh Campus.
